Zelaya gives ultimatum to coup government

Zelaya ultimatum to coup government

“There is no negotiation and on that point we have been clear”

Telesur July 13, 2009

During a press conference in Managua on Monday, President Manuel Zelaya gave an ultimatum to the authorities who took power in a coup, to restore institutionality in Honduras by the next meeting of the mediation, or else “the mediation will fail and we will proceed to carry out other measures.”

Zelaya said that it is hoped that the next meeting in Costa Rica will be held sometime this week.

In his communique Zelaya said that the de facto government is only trying to buy time in order to carry out elections under the current regime. He added that his government considers offensive the attempt by the regime to draw out the mediation process, whose only objective should be to comply with the resolutions of the OAS and the UN, which rejected the coup and demand his restoration to power. At the same time, he denounced the repression and persecution against the Honduran people, representatives of his government and foreign journalists.

He said that in the face of these “criminal” actions his government denounces before the international community that “the only objective of this dictatorship is to use Óscar Arias.” Zelaya said that his government will remain at the mediation table only under the premise that through the mediator (Arias) his restoration is guaranteed.

Upon answering the questions of journalists Zelaya clarified once again that at this dialogue table “there is no negotiation and on that point we have been clear. There cannot be a president who has not been elected by the people; the rest is a farse.” He said that “after the resolutions taken by the OAS and the UN, the dialogue table will have as its objective to guarantee that those resolutions are complied with. There will be no dialogue that is not based on those articles.”

He also brought up the expulsion on Sunday of journalists from TeleSUR and Venezolana de Televisión, who were in Tegucigalpa transmitting the repression that the country is living through from the coup government, and said , “the small and independent media were repressed. In Honduras there is a media blockade.”

Zelaya will accept no compromise: Néstor Núñez

Honduras: Fundamental moments

by Néstor Núñez (Argenpress)

July 8, 2009

The arrangement for negotiations beginning this Thursday in Costa Rica between the deposed constitutional president, José Manuel Zelaya, and the putschists that illegally usurped the national government evidences different views of the bloody conflict.

The proposal for dialogue arose in Washington from the encounter between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Zelaya himself, even though it turns out to be symptomatic that when finalizing the interview, each one offered separate statements to the press.

As a matter of fact, Clinton pushed for the idea of a negotiation under the formal auspices of Costa Rica where, she insisted, “the parties should exchange impressions on many issues and arrive at a mutual agreement” in order to put an end to the explosive internal situation in the most impoverished Central American country.

That version suggests a certain equality of rights and representation between rivals for power who, together, should arrive at “balanced” conclusions.

One should not doubt, of course, that at this time some in the empire are betting on the return of a bound-up Zelaya as the least worst choice and better than a mob that, it is evident, has no future before the Honduran people nor before the rest of the world.

Meanwhile, Zelaya was clear and precise when he said in his statements in Washington that he will attend the dialogue to demand the end of the de facto regime of the putschists and the return to Honduras of the rule of law and constitutional norms that were violated on June 28 by the military and the oligarchy.

There will be no betrayal of the people who struggle and fall in the streets, said the president, whose restoration without conditions is demanded by the popular classes of Honduras and all of the governments on the planet.

So the coming hours may be fundamental for Honduras. The permanent resistance of the people of that nation, admirable for their courage, organization and impetus, will continue being decisive in the achievement of a victory without fissures or compromises, just like the erectness demonstrated by their maximum and legitimate representative, together with an active and permanent global solidarity.

These premises will be vital to twist the hand of those who caress plans of a bound and tutelary president beneath the masked rhetoric and good-natured faces.

HONDURAS: HORAS FUNDAMENTALES

New York Times says Zelaya may be willing to accept presidency without powers

by Diana Barahona

Sunday, July 12, 2009

The New York Times reported today that Zelaya indicated he may be willing to accept the “Haiti option” of accepting strict limitations on his powers in return for the United States allowing him back into his country:

“While Mr. Zelaya indicated that he was willing to accept a compromise that would return him to office with significantly limited powers, the officials said, it appeared that Mr. Micheletti believed he could run out the clock and hold on to the presidency until his country’s presidential elections in November.”

The source for this claim was “three officials close to the talks” in Costa Rica, who may well be CIA agents spreading disinformation to demoralize Zelaya’s supporters. President Chávez has stated clearly that the Costa Rican talks are dead, and that President Arias set a “nefarious precedent” when he welcomed putschist Roberto Micheletti into the presidential manor and expected President Zelaya to sit at the same table with him.

The Times also reported that Micheletti has hired “high-profile lawyers with strong Washington connections” to push his cause on Capitol Hill. One lawyer is Lanny J. Davis, who was President Bill Clinton’s personal lawyer and campaigned for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Chávez urges Obama to withdraw support to Honduran putschists

The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela warns U.S. president that he will not deceive the world with a discourse that contradicts his actions. ‘If the U.S. government really does not support the coup, you would already have withdrawn all of your troops from the Palmerola military base’

It’s time for the United States President Barack Obama to clearly demonstrate his proposal of changing U.S. policy in Latin America, by completely withdrawing the support of the United States for the de facto government that took over Honduras after overthrowing the legitimate president, Manuel Zelaya.

This is what Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez Frías said this Sunday during the program, “Aló, Presidente,” filmed from the state of Aragua.

“Obama, withdraw the gringo soldiers from Honduras, withdraw all of the support to the putschists, freeze their accounts, withdraw their visas and you will see this government come to an end immediately. With that you would help to accelerate its demise because what they are doing is taking oxygen from the empire,” said Chávez to his U.S. counterpart.

For President Chávez it is imperative that the leader in the White House demonstrate a clear position regarding his policies in favor of integration, the change that he promised and against the interventionism and interference in the countries of our America and the world, using as a stage the current crisis in Honduras.

“If the U.S. government really does not support the coup, you would already have withdrawn all of your troops from the Palmerola military base. If you take this action you demonstrate that you don’t support the coup,” he said.

He warned Obama that “you will not deceive the world” with a discourse that contradicts your actions;” this is the moment of truth; demonstrate if it is true that you are willing to confront the hawks of the empire. If not, it is better that you leave, because you will end up worse than Bush.”

Chávez announced to the president of the United States that the changes in Latin America are not going to stop, even if they send the sixth fleet.

“Obama, do something. Be coherent with your discourse”: Chavez

by Diana Barahona

July 10, 2009. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Frías held a press conference Friday in which he roundly criticized Costa Rican President Oscar Árias and the Obama administration for coddling the criminals who carried out a military coup in Honduras on June 28.

Holding The Communist Manifesto, Chávez called the hundreds of media references to his alleged interference in Honduras a “phantasm,” just like Marx’s ironic reference to the “phantasm of Communism” that the European ruling classes claimed was spreading through Europe. He said that this smear campaign signified a recognition on the part of the elites that the new left in Latin America was a force to be reckoned with.

“Now here in Latin America it’s no longer communism. They didn’t throw out Zelaya this time because he was a communist like they threw out Cuba. They overthrew Zelaya not because he was a communist like they overthrew Jacobo Árbenz with that excuse by the same empire. It’s no longer communism in order to overthrow and kill Salvador Allende. It’s no longer communism in order to overthrow and throw out Juan Bosch. And one hundred more.

“Now it’s Chávez. The phantasm of Chávez—they have set that ball rolling everywhere. A since what I am is a humble, humble soldier, in truth the phantasm isn’t Chávez. They talk about Chávez but the phantasm is Bolívar, ALBA, the Bolivarian alliance. There they are afraid of the phantasm. And they demonize, they created a phantasm. But they don’t realize that their creation, what it does is to strengthen the reality of some peoples that are waking up.

“That’s why what happened in Costa Rica was a miscarriage, it was a miscarriage, and there it is, buried. Nevertheless, since the miscarriage is buried, Washington’s horrible miscarriage, a tiny little candle was surely left there: a commission discussing I-don’t-know-what, until the candle burns out; they are at a wake for the burial in Costa Rica. But the precedent is nefarious; the precedent is nefarious; a putschist, a usurper received by a democratic president.”

Chávez harshly criticized President Arias for receiving Micheletti, saying that if “Goriletti” had landed in Venezuela he would have been taken prisoner like any mafia don. He didn’t spare the Obama administration from criticism, either, challenging him to take concrete actions against the coup. Citing the many leftist politicians denied visas by the United States, (including himself) Chávez asked,

“Now why doesn’t the United States withdraw the visa from ‘Goriletti’ and his gorillas? Now, right now. Freeze their accounts, the properties they have in the United States, their businesses, because all of them are businessmen. Pressure them. You have a military base. Why don’t you begin some small movements there in the military base, Palmerola, or you withdraw all of the soldiers and troops from there? Something. Do something. Obama, do something. Be coherent with your word, with your discourse.”

Chávez assured the world that Zelaya would return to Honduras, saying “Last night ‘Goriletti’ said it again, yesterday in Costa Rica: ‘If the president enters’ . . . because Zelaya is going to enter. He is determined to enter. I don’t know from where, if by sea, if by air, if by land, but Zelaya is going to enter Honduras . . . ‘If he enters we will take him prisoner.’ How are they going to take him prisoner? Where are they going to stick one hundred thousand prisoners? Two hundred thousand prisoners? Where?”

Transcript from Radio Mundial:

Dónde van a meter a cien mil presos? Docientos mil presos?
